Best Movie 2010

It's probably almost halfway through 2011 already! But I'm still in the mood of compiling my favorite movie of 2011 :)

10. Easy A

Yes, I don't agree with many things with the moral of the story. But this movie is a good laughing bomb, and an intelligent one at that. There's one scene in this movie that my sis and I couldn't stop laughing for a good two minutes! It is about Olive who uses rumour to boost his social status and later had to clean her own sh*t. Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci are both hilarious as ironically understanding parents.

9. Tron: Legacy

Awesome effect. Awesome soundtrack. Combine both, and you get a movie that brings you to an otherworldly realm more awesome than Pandora. The Grid is like The Matrix, except it is still contained in a arcade game console. Which means, Sam Flynn, the movie's protagonist, has to be zapped first to join his already-trapped father to defeat CLU, an avatar who has taken over the system to his own rule. No geeky stuff or big words like 'quantum mechanics' or 'parabolic equation', only cool effects.

8. Red

Some thinks this movie is a less-flashy alternative to The Expendables. I don't think the latter even come close to this awesome movie. This is the story where experience and nerve defeat cutting-edge technology and large workforce. So the moral is, as you age, don't lose the lesson. And watching Helen Mirren firing a machine-gun in a dinner gown alone is worth it!

7. Scott Pilgrim VS The World

You'll have to be a reaaaaallly boring person to not like this movie. This is like watching a fun enemy-bashing video game without the controller. Yup, complete with the 'kapoow!' effect! Michael Cera, awesome as Scott Pilgrim, has to battle seven of his current girlfriend's exes. And they're not the normal, everything-you-own-in-a-box-to-the-left exes. Power vegan?

6. Buried

This movie is all dirt, and dirt cheap. But here's to prove that budget and effects doesn't necessarily sell (yeah, am talking to you KRU). From start to the end, the only human that you'll be seeing is Paul Conroy (played surprisingly well by Ryan Reynolds), trying to escape after being buried alive six feet under. Yup, many will get claustrophobic, but those who doesn't should still watch this. Funny that his cellphone work though. Mine sometimes even lose signal in broad daylight.

5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Don't mistake this split as a way for raking in more money (although, I suspect that no one in the production company is objecting...). It's the story. This movie is a 2.5 hours of teaser. Remember Kill Bill Part 1? It's objective is only to prepare you for the ultimate climax that will come only on second chapter. David Yates is building the tension ever so slowly, and not only from this movie, but since Order Of The Phoenix. In the end, it is going to feel like a 10-hour long movie. Pheeeww...!!

4. Kick-Ass

Kick ass really kicked-ass! So why must all costumed heroes have superpowers (wait, it probably should be the other way around)? What if an average Joe just want to wear a costume and save the day? So did Dave, who bought costume from the internet and made viral fame from you-tube video. He called himself Kick-Ass. But he learned that being notorious isn't the key to fighting crime (well duh), and along came It-Girl who showed him who's the real ass-kicker. Awesome yet hilarious fighting scene! They teamed up to beat the rest of the villains. But then, of course, a costumed villain showed up and... oh crap just watch the movie already if you haven't.

3. Never Let Me Go

So this movie didn't appeal the mass. It worked like a charm on me! What genre is this movie? Sci-Fi? Drama? Mystery? I'd say all of them, with a hint of Horror. And yet, alluring, haunting and melancholic. Despite (I think) being set in an alternate universe, it's all too real, too familiar, and makes sense. Based from TIME-100-Best-Novel listed book by Kazuo Ishiguro, it is about three friends who are raised in a special school with a mission they barely understand. A mission of life and death, and that includes of others. Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Kiera Knightly are all awesome as delicate, confused and yet accepting people, with notable underlying current of anger and frustration.

2. The Social Network

If you think this movie is about Facebook, you're dead wrong. Yes, it revolves around founding of Facebook, that's no mistake. But what really make this movie move is about loyalty and betrayal, trust and antitrust, being ambitious and paying the price. That, coupled with awesome performance, awesome directing, fast-paced script and all other everything-nice ingredients, and you get The Social Network. This movie can revolve around nose trimmer for all I care, and still be good.

Aaaand... number 1 is.... ?

1. INCEPTION

Of course, what else? We have a lot of reason to thank Christopher Nolan for through this movie. Inception practically saved last year's summer from craptacular list of movie (The Expendables, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, etc). Another one is to bring Tom Hardy to the spotlight. I love that guy. And of course, this movie is a masterpiece in every aspect; premise, directing, acting, cinematography, effects, soundtrack... You name it. This movie is about dreams within layer of dreams. And big this movie dreamed.

And looks like Nolan is not staying low anytime soon with the coming The Dark Knight Rises.

Wait! What?...

... No Shutter Island?
OK, so this movie is good. Awesome editing, dramatic premise and thrilling musical score. But I can't help feeling that it plagiarized Identity, which to me, is much more thrilling and less tacky. Not Martin Scorcese's best, IMHO.

... No Toy Story 3?
Again, it's good, but I just can't see how this movie is better than How To Train A Dragon.

... No The King's Speech?
Good, but not great. But I like both Colin Firth (which I'm glad won Best Actor) and Geoffrey Rush.

... No 127 Hours?
Just watched it two days ago. Again, good, but not great.

... What about The Fighter, The Kids Are Alright, Black Swan?
Uh.. Haven't watch those... It's a crime, I know.
